GRADUATION PROJECT - ONO
An alternative futuristic scenario story that has a physical element.
graduation
ONO is a project that I worked on together with Marieke Huizenga. This was our graduation project for Cibap which was also exhibited at museum de Fundatie in Zwolle and at PROTO. ONO offers a worldview represented by characters through various products. This worldview arises in a physical product which represents the state of being unable to survive on the barren moon as opposed to an uninhabitable Earth. The robot is a concept used to show humanity’s dependence on technology.
Speculative Design
Speculative design focuses not so much on solving today's problems of users or customers, but rather on rethinking the possible futures and the influence of new technological innovations. Speculative design tries to imagine what it would be like to design without the current limitations of technology, culture and politics.
With the intention of exploring various perspectives, speculative design thrives on imagination. The idea is to create spaces for discussion and debate and to inspire and encourage people’s imaginations. By speculating with design, we can collectively redefine what we mean and want with reality.
Oh no...
ONO (short for Oh no, we fucked up) focusses on the future of Earth and humanity. In this alternative future something on Earth went terribly wrong. Perhaps it has something to do with the Russians invading Ukraine, or perhaps it has something to do with our own hubris not taking care of the planet. This period is referred to as the “Collapse”. With no home to return to humanity sets for the stars, looking for a new place to call their home. The perfect home is basically traded for a rock. People are not living a comfortable life, and life is more about surviving. Machines are needed to take care of the humans and the base. Nieuwe alinea
Friendly robot
In the early stages of design, we took a black paged scrapbook and used a white pencil with rough lines to really give ourselves the feeling of living in a pitch-dark space on the moon and getting ourselves in this perspective of living. Speculative design tries to imagine what it would be like to design without the current limitations of technology, culture and politics. Because of this, there was no restriction on the design. A friendly looking robot with humane and astronautical characteristics was the intention from the beginning. To prevent it from becoming too human, negative spaces were added. Ultimately it was decided that if a robot had to live and take care of humans, it had to be relatable.
We're not done yet
We're currently trying to develop ONO into an immersive storytelling platform. With a comic that will dive into this grim future and will allow the reader to make their own choices! Stay tuned and follow @ono.verse on instagram to learn more!
