PACKAGING DESIGN - MAXIMUS
1980 toy design and marketing.
ANOTHER UNIVERSE
This is a Gundam robot customization from the Gundam saga, in a totally new universe!
For this project I developed a new world, a new universe and a new group of unlikely heroes and villains. The experiment was mostly focussed on experimenting with packaging. Most notably creating a box based to look like an old 1980's toy box. Fresh ideas began to pour in from there. In the end, these products were produced:
- a box
- a poster
- a toy
The introduction to the universe reads as follows:
'Once a paradise, the magnificent city of Cibap is being terrorized by the evil Skeleton King. Possessing amazing robotic armies and bend on conquering Cibap.
Luckily for the citizens of this great city the heroic team of teenagers Maximus and Mittens stand in the way of the dark lord. They battle the darkness and menaces he unleashes.
With semi, equal powers, our heroes must explore space and gather the keystones. With each keystone they find, they will grow in knowledge, strength and power. Only the side with all the keystones will be able to win this inevitable conflict.'
POSTER
The poster was the hardest to tackle. I wanted to recreate something that felt as if it could've come from 1980. The first thing that came to mind was Transformers. After doing some research I figured that the way they (re)created the artwork for the box was with spray paint and masking tape. To me this seemed too time consuming and too expensive. In the end I replicated the process digitally by first making the general shapes in Illustrator. These shapes would then serve as masks in Photoshop. I would then go over the shape with a brush recreating the same look as the spray paint.
