PACKAGING DESIGN - MAHI

Playful designed.

A TIME BEFORE TIME

After my internship at 999Games I got inspired to make my own packaging. Designing a box is not so easy as it might look. The packaging design is first made in a 2D-design and is later made into a 3D design. Not only should a design be adapted  to the type of packaging, but factors such as color, weight, shape and material also play a role.

This design was based on LEGO BIONICLE. As a child, I loved Lego. A source of inspiration for me was the series BIONICLE, short for biological chronicle. At the time LEGO took a big risk and invested enormously in the storytelling aspect of their toys. Making numerous games, comics and movies. One such story was set on the island of Mata Nui which LEGO even took the time to fill with fauna. This box design is made for a Mahi.

Wild Mahi live alone or in herds. Variants are especially equipped for tropical, cold, and volcanic environments. They tend to be territorial, quickly charging down anything that approaches and then ramming them with their dangerous horns. Despite this, Mahi can be domesticated by Matoran, making them useful livestock.

Box design

This project was an experiment to test certain digital editing techniques. I had found old BIONICLE artwork and a program that had 3D LEGO parts. All the images of the Mahi are 3D renders that I made in Blender.

The instructions and the model were made first in Stud.io, but because I really wanted to stay within the 2001 small BIONICLE format I wanted to have the instruction fitted on one A4. Which meant that I had to rearrange the instructions in Illustrator. The back of the instructions used to have little posters with a so called "turaga" (elder) and a "toa" (hero). I liked this idea and set to recreate te scene with the Mahi and a matoran (villager). The figures were again rendered in Blender and the composited and edited in Photoshop. The backgrounds are original Bionicle artworks which were then placed behind the renders.

The LEGO Logo, the TECHNIC Logo, the BIONICLE backgrounds and the BIONICLE Logo belong to LEGO ofcourse.
