PACKAGING & TOY DESIGN - SHRIMPBOT

The toy that fell into a vat of shrimps

COSMIC AND BIZARRE

The idea is to create a collective of different toys, packaging, logo's and other stuff under the name 'Cosmic and Bizarre Adventures'. Giving everything a roll to play in a made up universe. This would be the same universe as described in the Maximus project. Every new design will add to the story, allowing it to evolve and develop. It is supposed to be a fun way to keep busy.
In the end, these products were produced:

  1. a box
  2. a booklet
  3. a toy

The introduction to the universe reads as follows:

On Earth the Skeleton King’s last plan was thwarted. He lost the key stones to the heroes, who in turn grew in knowledge, strength and power. After his defeat he managed to escape to a secret base. There, he designed a new and deadly shrimp, and plotted to unleash it in order to exterminate living beings. After being defeated (again), the vat in which the shrimps were held fell over one of his skeletongoons and unknowingly to all transformed him into Shrimpbot.

Shrimpbot

Rather than build Shrimpbot from scratch, I decided to buy a Vintage Battle Droid from the Star Wars saga. It already had shirmpish colors and a strange head shape. The design was modified with 3D printed parts to add new play functions and to look like a Shrimp. The program used to design the parts was Fusion360. Creating the toy itself was challenging, since printing was problematic due to its small size. To make him look more like a shrimp I added claws.

Battle Droids come with a backpack, I thought it would be fun if I added another creature on Shrimpbot's back. The antennas would complete the shrimp look, but designing a new backpack also gave me the opportunity to add a play feature. It has been a trend with 3D printing to print a flexible/articulated creature. Most often people printed a snake or a slug, but it inspired me to create a flexible tail.

COMIC

To complete the package I also came up with the idea to create a kind of newsletter. This newsletter would explain a bit of the story and the character. Something that I really wanted to try was drawing a comic.
